Dedicated Burg Partition

After successfully installing Burg you may install it on a dedicated partition. For sake of illustration let’s assume I have made a 1 GB partition hd0,11 and have formatted it to ext3 which has a label Burg.

My command goes….

sudo burg-install –root-directory=/media/Burg /dev/sda

If that doesn’t work you may try force installing

sudo burg-install –force –root-directory=/media/Burg /dev/sda

Where: ‘/media/Burg’ is the mount point for the file system to have Burg files created.

Where: ‘/dev/sda’ is the hard disk in which I want to write the stage1 code to MBR. That command creates a new /boot and /boot/burg/ directory if one doesn’t already exist, and creates or refreshes Burg files in /boot/burg, all except for burg.cfg   For more details read Herman’s awesome tutorial on creating a dedicated Grub partition.

Relax file permissions for easier editing.

sudo chmod 777 -R /media/Burg

burg-mkconfig always assume the location of video.lst to be /boot/burg (This affect grub2 too). Anyway, you can just copy video.lst from /media/Burg/boot/burg to /boot/burg. To use graphic menu, you should also copy /boot/burg/fonts and /boot/burg/themes directory to /media/Burg/boot/burg. Then, use this command to generate burg.cfg:

sudo burg-mkconfig -o /media/Burg/boot/burg/burg.cfg

This command is more versatile than update-grub because we can use the -o option to have the results printed to a any filename and file path we like.

sudo cd /media/Burg

sudo update-Burg

This will get your Burg up and running from a dedicated partition.Burg may have a new version released and then you may want to install the update manually to the dedicated partition, so heres how you go about it.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install burg

It will give you many options including if you want to keep the local installed version or install the update manager version. Choose to install the update manager version and then copy the folder burg from /boot to media/Burg/boot/ folder on the dedicated partition.

sudo burg-install –force –root-directory=/media/Burg /dev/sda

sudo burg-mkconfig -o /media/Burg/boot/burg/burg.cfg

cd /media/Burg/boot/burg

sudo update-burg
